Dirty MarblesObjective: Get all of your marbles to home. Then help your teammate get all of his or her marbles home. Setup: Take 1 triangular board per person playing and hook them together using the pegs and rubber bands as shown (Fig. 1). Each player chooses a teammate and sits across from him or her at the table. Then each player chooses 5 marbles of the same color and places them in their respective start location (Fig. 2). Shuffle the decks of cards together and deal 5 cards to each player. Place the remaining cards face down to form a draw pile. To Play: The player left of the dealer starts by playing a card into their discard pile and moving their marble accordingly. (Normal marble movement is to the left). After moving a marble the player draws a card, ending their turn. The next player does the same. Play continues to the left. The cards: Cards not mentioned move forward at face value. Ace: Move a marble forward 1 space or get a marble out of start. Seven: Move a marble 7spaces forward or split the 7 spaces between two marbles. Eight: Move a marble 8 spaces backwards only. Face Cards: Move a marble 10 spaces forward or get a marble out of start. Jokers: A marble not in start may trade places with any other marble not in start or a marble in start may send an opponents marble to start or a marble in start may send a teammates marble to the almost home space. Rules for play: 1. If you land on an opponent’s marble, you send them back to start. If you land on your teammate’s marble you send them to their almost home space. 2. You cannot move your marble past another one of your own marbles. You may, however, move your marble past any other player’s marble. 3. You must move a marble if you have a card that can be played. 4. You need an exact number to get into your home. Meaning, you may have to move your marble past your home if you do not have a card small enough to move you in. 5. When you have successfully moved all of your marbles into your home, then you move your teammate’s marbles for your turn. 6. If you do not have a card that you can play to move a marble, you must discard a card for your turn. (Optional rule 1) Optional Rules for Play: Mercy rule: If after 5 turns you still haven’t been able to move a marble from the cards you’ve discarded, you may move one marble out of start. No Mercy Rule: If you forget to draw a card at the end your turn and the next player finishes his or her turn and draws a card, it’s too late for you to draw a card, you will have one fewer card.

CasinoThe Players, the Cards, and the ObjectiveThe game works best with 2 players, but can be played with 3 and 4 players. Four players play in teams, two against two, with partners sitting opposite each other. A regular 52 card deck is used, no jokers. The objective is to capture cards, for points, from a layout on the table. The DealThe dealer deals four cards to each player and four cards face up in the center of the table. The deal is in twos: two cards to each opposing player, two to the table, and then two to the dealer; Then repeat once. The remainder of the deck is put aside. After everyone has played their four cards, another hand of four cards is dealt, in a like manner, to each player from the remaining cards, but NO new cards are dealt to the center of the table. This continues until all 52 cards have been dealt. The dealer must announce "last hand" when dealing out the last cards. After the hand has been played and all the points scored, the deal passes to the left for the next round of play. The PlayStarting with the player to the left of the dealer and continuing clockwise, each player in turn must play one, and only one, card from their hand face up on the table. This card may or may not capture one or more cards from the table. In case of a capture, the player picks up his/her card and the captured card(s) and places them face down in their own pile (to be scored later). If there is no capture the played card remains face up on the table. The turn then passes to the next player. In detail, the possible types of play are as follows:
When all the cards have been played in the final deal, the last player who made a capture also wins any cards which are left on the table. That is why it is important that the dealer should announce "last" when dealing the last cards. Hint on tactics: it is often good for the dealer to hold back a face card to play last if possible; this will capture a matching face card on the table and thereby also win any other table cards that remain. Scoring Each player (or team) counts their score based on the pile of cards they have won. There are eleven possible points in each hand: whoever has the Most Cards gets three points; whoever has Most Spades is one point; each Ace is worth one point (capturing an ace with another ace is called "cash" by some players) the ten of diamonds, called Big Casino or the Good Ten, is worth two points; the two of spades, called Little Casino or the Good Two, is worth one point. If there is a tie for most cards or most spades, no one gets those points. Whoever first reaches a total of 21 or more points, over however many rounds it takes, wins the game. If two people reach the target on the same round, whoever has the higher score wins. If there is a tie, another round is played. |
No one can go back and make a brand new start. Anyone can start from now and make a brand new ending. | You can't make someone love you. All you can do is be someone who can be loved, and the rest is up to the person to realize your worth. |

How the Institute Helps Us with Missionary PreparationFirst let’s try to put things into perspective. This life is all about preparation, for things in this life and after this life. “Therefore I would that ye should be perfect even as I, or your Father who is in heaven is perfect.” 3 Nephi 12:48 Our objective is to become perfect. Become like Christ or our Heavenly Father. Or in other words we are preparing to become God’s, meaning our exaltation. But how do we obtain all this? Line upon line, precept upon precept, here a little and there a little. So we see that it’s not all at once. So we need to do our best. “Knowing that you can do better, and always striving to do better, is doing your best”. Everything that happens in our lives prepares us for something else. “18 Whatever principle of intelligence we attain unto in this life, it will rise with us in the resurrection. 19 And if a person gains more knowledge and intelligence in this life through his diligence and obedience than another, he will have so much the advantage in the world to come.” D&C 130:18-19 The knowledge and intelligence we have will be an advantage for us. Just one example: The church or the gospel has been given to us to help prepare us for all things. But we have to do our part for it to work. From the Bible I’d like to read a parable of the 10 virgins: “1 Then shall the kingdom of heaven be likened unto ten virgins, which took their lamps, and went forth to meet the bridegroom. 2 And five of them were wise, and five were foolish. 3 They that were foolish took their lamps, and took no oil with them: 4 But the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps. 5 While the bridegroom tarried, they all slumbered and slept. 6 And at midnight there was a cry made, Behold, the bridegroom cometh; go ye out to meet him. 7 Then all those virgins arose, and trimmed their lamps. 8 And the foolish said unto the wise, Give us of your oil; for our lamps are gone out.” Matthew 25:1-8 Now I’m going to stop there. As we see that half of them were not ready. They didn’t do their part, they didn’t prepare themselves, or they were not ready to be prepared. That statement is very important, so I’ll say it again. They were not ready to be prepared. What does that mean for us? “But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear” 1 Peter 3:15 There are four important things here. “Sanctify the Lord God in your hearts” meaning first we need to have a testimony. “Be ready to give an answer to every man that asketh you” Secondly, we need to understand the gospel in such a way that we can explain it to others. “Seek not to declare my word, but first seek to obtain my word…” D&C 11:21 We need to obtain the word before we declare it. I like the word “obtain” that he uses. To me it says understand and apply. Going back to 1 Peter, thirdly, it says, “a reason of hope that is in you” if we understand and apply these things we will bean example of hope to others. Lastly, “with meekness and fear” we need to be humble in doing all this. I really like what Joseph Smith said: “I teach them correct principles, and they govern themselves.” Joseph Smith “And behold, as the tree beginneth to grow, ye will say: Let us nourish it with great care, that it may get root, that it may grow up, and bring forth fruit unto us. And now behold, if ye nourish it with much care it will get root, and grow up, and bring forth fruit.” Alma 32:37 We need to do all that we can to nourish the tree. This is so important; this is the “action” of us. We have to do it ourselves no one can do it for us. Just like the five virgins couldn’t share their oil with the other five. We need to have that desire to perfect ourselves no matter what the cost. Now how does all this tie into missionary preparation? So let’s talk about the so called “best two years”. But were they really the best two years? If they were you have failed. The mission is not the climax of one’s life but an upward slope, just like the rest of our life. We can’t start preparing when the flood is here for it will be too late and we won’t be ready. Here’s something to think on: “Sitting up to your neck in water is no good for what will you do when a wave comes along? But if you are standing ankle deep in the water you have that much more on the wave. If it is still too much, Christ is there and he will be able to pull you up from under the wave so that you are saved. That is why you need to be a giant so that the biggest wave will only beat upon your ankles.” Matt Tubbs What a vision. Also on the same lines here is another quote: “The stomach of our souls is a bottomless pit. Fill it with the spirit.” Matt Tubbs I’d like to add: or the application of the principles of the gospel, so that we may have the spirit. This is why we attend church to be able to learn that gospel. “And moreover, I would ask, do ye suppose that ye must not worship God only once in a week?” Alma 32:11 This implies that we should worship Him more than once a week. Also it says: “Treasure up in your minds continually the words of life” D&C 84:85 Not only that but He’s given us ways to do so. Like: FHE, Young Men’s/Women’s, Seminary, and lastly, the institute. This is the program or tool given to us, specifically for this our stage of life. But we need to be prepared ourselves before anything that the Lord has given us will be of any use to us. Truthfully you don’t need the institute to be a great missionary, but what a great resource it is for us. Preparation for the mission is personal. Yes, your family or friends can help pay or buy the necessary things but spiritually you’re on your own. Preparing yourselves spiritually depends on your personal desire to do so and on your level of commitment. “And they were all young men, and they were exceedingly valiant for courage, and also for strength and activity; but behold, this was not all—they were men who were true at all times in whatsoever thing they were entrusted.” Alma 53:20 We need to be like them “true at all times.” This is something that you have to do for yourselves. So use the institute. It’s here for you. You can learn so much because the spirit is within the walls of the institute and if you are striving to learn and better yourselves, the spirit will teach and help you do so. Then you can be more prepared for all things of life and not just for a mission. So that we can be examples to those around us and that we might be able to assist them. And bring them to the light of the gospel or Christ, because we have strived to do so ourselves first. I know it’s hard. I know that God love’s us so much. He wants us to succeed and has given us everything that we need to do so. We have to take hold of it and use it how it was intended. I love this gospel and I know of its truth. It is the only way that we can return to our father in heaven and be as he is, perfect. In the name of Jesus Christ, Amen. |
The OneThe one, with whom, you marry is such a great and important choice. A choice that you should ponder and pray about, even consult with those who have and are married in the same way that you desire to be married, like for example your parents. Your parents are great sources of wisdom as are your grandparents; you should listen to them while and after making this grand choice. Keep in mind that when you marry you become one flesh and need to live your own lives how you both feel is right, not to be governed by anyone else. Such a choice should be made with much wisdom, for it will affect your whole life and all eternity. Shouldn’t you then treat this time of your life with the same amount of wisdom? Serving by doing more than service for the one, with whom, you could spend all eternity, is the best way you can start and live a long, loving, and service full relationship that will last through the eternities. You will make it to the temple together, and you will be ready and worthy for each other even with all of the weight and responsibilities that come with your wonderful celestial marriage. Don’t forget all the joys and happiness’s that also come from this preordained grouping for two of God’s children. One of the best ways that you can be prepared for the highest and most special level of commitment and devotion that comes with this awesome uniting of husband and wife is by becoming the best “you” that you can be. How is this accomplished you might wonder? On a scale of easiness this would be on the very hard side. This requires a constant effort and struggle to always do what you need to and should be doing. You need to take a step back from your busy and confusing life and look at who you are and what you have become. Once you have done this you need to look for all the things in your life and who you are that do not meet the Lord’s standards. Make a list of those things, and write them down in a safe place so that you can look at them frequently. Be careful with this; do not come down on yourself that you are worthless because of all your faults and shortcomings. This is the part that helps you to do your best, which is all that your Heavenly Father requires of us. A wise man once said, “Knowing that you can do better and always striving to do better, is doing your best.” Once you have made a list of these things pick some, one or two, that you want to work on, maybe the easier ones. Set a goal and plan how you will overcome this weakness. Don’t forget to pray and involve God. For example if you are short on patience, pray and ask God for help gaining patience. He won’t just give it to you but he gives you or allows you to have experiences that you might learn patience. Also don’t be discouraged if you falter in achieving your goal. You might perhaps falter many times on the way to accomplishing your goals, some more than others. The important thing is that you are progressively doing better. Until you can say that you have accomplished the thing that you have set out to do. Beware, you aren’t done yet. Just like a broken bone is weaker where it has been broken so are you where you once were weak. If you have fallen once you can fall again. Going through this process also makes you stronger. Since you have done it before you know the signs and tempting places, which helps you so that you can avoid them and not falter but be strong and immovable. One more thing, your partner deserves the most perfect you. “Therefore I would that ye should be perfect even as I, or your Father who is in heaven is perfect.” 3 Nephi 12:48. You need to be the best you can for yourself, your spouse, and your God. Another thing going along with being your best self is getting rid of all ungodliness in your life. You have just been taught how to better yourself, but it will not do much good if you don’t rid yourself of worldliness also. Again take a step back look at things, people, and their influences on you. Now you must decide if these are inspiring and uplifting or harmful and evil influences. Potential influences are things like: movies, TV, magazines, friends, thoughts, etc; whether for righteousness or wickedness. “Wherefore, every thing which inviteth and enticeth to do good, and to love God, and to serve him, is inspired of God. But whatsoever thing persuadeth men to do evil, and believe not in Christ, and deny him, and serve not God, then ye may know with a perfect knowledge it is of the devil.” Moroni 7:13, 17. This scripture gives you the way whereby you are to judge the things of your life. Then make a list as before and plan how to overcome them. The important thing is to act. These are good ideas but you must take action. Stay close to God and He will help you in your unending path to perfection, which is this life, not to mention the many blessings He has waiting for you as you are true and faithful trudging on His narrow, less taken path. As you rid your life of evil influences you will be more in tune with the Holy Spirit of God, being more apt to hear, listen, and able to follow His guidance and council. Does not your “spouse to be” deserve someone that is close to God and has His spirit, so that you might receive revelation for your family which helps them be close to God in this deteriorating world? By doing these things you deserve and are worthy of a spirit-filled spouse for yourself. For those of you that have priesthood capabilities, does not your wife deserve a worthy man who can use his God given authority to bless your family? Not only is your wife deserving to have the priesthood in the home but so do all of God’s children that are brought into this world. “Everything we learn as priesthood bearers should bless our families.”¹ She needs to know that you can bless her and her future family, especially before you are married. If you’re not ready now, why would you be when you are married? You need to prepare yourself now for what is to come. Do your best and be a worthy and honorable priesthood holder. Women, you also need to be worthy of a faithful priesthood holder. As you magnify God’s priesthood, you will touch the lives of many and give valuable service to all of them. Your family will benefit the most from this service because they are the nearest to you, they will see your example increase and your love grow, and they are and will want to be a part of it. Next in line are your callings. Every one, when they become a member, is a home or visiting teacher. This is one of the callings that every member of a certain age and up has. It is not one that we are set apart to do but it is of such great importance that we magnify it. In so doing you bless the lives of so many other families, even your own because God will bless you and your family greatly. Then you have those that are given to you by your bishop or other authorized servants. By magnifying your callings you serve others and it shows those around you that you believe in God and that you have a testimony of this everlasting gospel. Who wants a spouse that doesn’t magnify that which they have been given to be in charge of? How would you be able to teach your children to magnify their future calling if you are not magnifying yours now? If you’re not devoted to your callings, if you’re not devoted to your beliefs, if you’re not devoted to your God, how could you be any more devoted to your spouse and kids? Serving others and your God shows that you are striving to enter His presence, with your family at your side, for all eternity. Becoming less selfish will improve any relationship that you are in. The best way to do this is by serving those around you, including those close to you, and forgetting yourself in their service. A willing man serving others cannot be prideful, but is humble. Christ was the most humble; no wonder He had a life full of service. Christ devoted His whole life to the service of others. God has not asked so much of you; just serve others, with your heart willing, when and as much as you are able to. By so doing you and those you serve will be humble. By serving others you are serving your God (Matthew 25:40). Not only that but you can be an instrument in the hands of God to bless others and your love for them will grow. Service increases your love for those you serve. If you care about someone you should let them know frequently. Think about what they need or want and do your best to help them obtain it. Do little things for them, let them know you care. For example you might want to write them little notes saying how much you care about them and leave them where they will find them. Be creative and do new things that they would enjoy more than you, they will feel special that you have chosen to do what they enjoy doing. Everyone needs to feel important or that someone cares about them more than anyone else in the world. You will never be done with this part, it is ever ongoing. The moment you stop showing that you care and doing those small little things is when your relationship starts going down the drain and your love for others and especially the ones you care about most will fall apart. Lean on God. This too will better any relationship. When you involve Him in your relationship and follow His council, He is able and will bless you more fully and give you more guidance in this troubled world. You can never be too close to God. When you struggle, try to figure things out on your own, but pray for inspiration and guidance, He will help you. Obey all the commandments to the best of your ability. Pray with your heart. Involve Him in your choice of an eternal mate, He knows you better than anyone. He will help you find one with whom you will be happy with for eternity. You will find just the right one for you and both of you will have Him in your lives and your family will be “highly favored of the Lord” as it says it scriptures for those who are close to God. “And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent” John 17:3. You can only know them if you are close to them and follow their council. As it says here “this is life eternal”, that is your goal, obtain it! Think of them often and make them laugh and be happy; why be with them if you cannot be such? For such is the plan and purpose of life. “Men are that they might have joy” 2 Nephi 2:25. The happiness and joy you experience in this time of your life, not only will be the most rewarding to you so far but it will also be a type of things to come in the eternities. |
