Dirty Marbles

Objective: Get all of your marbles to home. Then help your teammate get all of his or her marbles home.

Setup: Take 1 triangular board per person playing and hook them together using the pegs and rubber bands as shown (Fig. 1). Each player chooses a teammate and sits across from him or her at the table. Then each player chooses 5 marbles of the same color and places them in their respective start location (Fig. 2). Shuffle the decks of cards together and deal 5 cards to each player. Place the remaining cards face down to form a draw pile.

To Play: The player left of the dealer starts by playing a card into their discard pile and moving their marble accordingly. (Normal marble movement is to the left). After moving a marble the player draws a card, ending their turn. The next player does the same. Play continues to the left.

The cards: Cards not mentioned move forward at face value. Ace: Move a marble forward 1 space or get a marble out of start. Seven: Move a marble 7spaces forward or split the 7 spaces between two marbles. Eight: Move a marble 8 spaces backwards only. Face Cards: Move a marble 10 spaces forward or get a marble out of start. Jokers: A marble not in start may trade places with any other marble not in start or a marble in start may send an opponents marble to start or a marble in start may send a teammates marble to the almost home space.

Rules for play: 1. If you land on an opponent’s marble, you send them back to start. If you land on your teammate’s marble you send them to their almost home space. 2. You cannot move your marble past another one of your own marbles. You may, however, move your marble past any other player’s marble. 3. You must move a marble if you have a card that can be played. 4. You need an exact number to get into your home. Meaning, you may have to move your marble past your home if you do not have a card small enough to move you in. 5. When you have successfully moved all of your marbles into your home, then you move your teammate’s marbles for your turn. 6. If you do not have a card that you can play to move a marble, you must discard a card for your turn. (Optional rule 1)

Optional Rules for Play:
Mercy rule: If after 5 turns you still haven’t been able to move a marble from the cards you’ve discarded, you may move one marble out of start.

No Mercy Rule: If you forget to draw a card at the end your turn and the next player finishes his or her turn and draws a card, it’s too late for you to draw a card, you will have one fewer card.

The Players, the Cards, and the Objective

The game works best with 2 players, but can be played with 3 and 4 players. Four players play in teams, two against two, with partners sitting opposite each other. A regular 52 card deck is used, no jokers. The objective is to capture cards, for points, from a layout on the table.

The Deal

The dealer deals four cards to each player and four cards face up in the center of the table. The deal is in twos: two cards to each opposing player, two to the table, and then two to the dealer; Then repeat once. The remainder of the deck is put aside. After everyone has played their four cards, another hand of four cards is dealt, in a like manner, to each player from the remaining cards, but NO new cards are dealt to the center of the table. This continues until all 52 cards have been dealt. The dealer must announce "last hand" when dealing out the last cards. After the hand has been played and all the points scored, the deal passes to the left for the next round of play.

The Play

Starting with the player to the left of the dealer and continuing clockwise, each player in turn must play one, and only one, card from their hand face up on the table. This card may or may not capture one or more cards from the table. In case of a capture, the player picks up his/her card and the captured card(s) and places them face down in their own pile (to be scored later). If there is no capture the played card remains face up on the table. The turn then passes to the next player.

In detail, the possible types of play are as follows:

1. Capturing with a face card:
If the card played is a face card (king, queen or jack) which matches the rank of a face card on the table, the face card on the table may be captured. This is the only possible capture with a face card. If the table contains more than one matching card only one may be captured. Example: The Q♠ and Q♥ are on the table, and the Q♦ is played. The player may capture one of the queens from the table but not both.
2. Capturing with a numered card:
A numeral card (Ace, 2, ..., 10) can capture any numeral cards on the table which are of the same rank as the card played, and any sets of numeral cards which add up to the rank of the card played, with the following restrictions: cards which are part of a build (see below) can only be captured by a card of the rank announced for that build; When sets are captured, each captured card can only counted as belonging to one such set. Example If an eight is played it could capture one, two or three eights from the table. It could also capture a five and a three, or a four and two twos. If the following cards are on the table: A 2 3 5 6 8, then an eight could capture 8 6 2 5 3 or 8 5 2 A, but not all six cards.
3. Building:
A numeral card may be played and combined with other cards on the table, placing them together to form a build. A build can be made out of any collection of numeral cards which can be captured by a single numeral card according to rule 2 above. The player making the build must announce the capturing number (saying, for example, "building 5"), and must hold a numeral card which can later make the capture. There are two types of build: single builds and multiple builds. A single build consists of two or more cards whose capture values add up to the capture value of the build - for example a 5-build made of a 2 and a 3, or a 10-build made of A-4-5. A multiple build consists of two or more cards or sets of cards, each of which equates to the capture value of the build - for example a 5-build made of a 2 and a 3 plus a 4 and an ace, or a 5-build made of A-4 and 5, or a 9-build made of two nines, or a 9-build made of 6-3 plus 5-4 plus 9. When you make a build, it must include the card you just played - you cannot create a build consisting entirely of cards that were already on the table. Cards which have been made into a build can subsequently only be captured as a unit, never separately. Examples If there is a 5 on the table, a player holding a 3 and an 8 may put the 3 on the 5 and announce "building 8"; this single build can now only be captured by an 8. If there is an ace and a two on the table, a player holding two threes and a six could play one of the threes and either: capture the two and the ace; combine the played three with the ace and the two and make a single build, announcing "building 6"; combine the played three with the ace and the two and make a multiple build, announcing "building 3"; It would not be legal to play the three on the ace, building four, or on the two, building five, as the player does not hold a four or a five.
4. Capturing a build:
A build can be captured by playing a numeral card of the rank which was announced when the build was made. It is thus possible to "steal" a build created by another player, if you have the right numeral card. If on your turn, the table contains a build which you created or added to yourself, and no other player has added to it since your last turn, you are not allowed simply to trail a card (as in rule 6) on your next turn. You must make a capture of some kind, create another build, or add to a build (i.e. follow rule 3, 4 or 5). It is always possible to capture in this situation - if nothing else, you must hold the capturing card for the build you just made, or your build was illegal. If there is a build on the table, and you were the last player to add a card to this build, you are not allowed to play so as to leave yourself with no card equal to the value of this build. While capturing a build, you can also capture any loose cards on the table that add up to the same number. For example you have made a build of 9 and there is a 5 on the table. If the player before you plays a 4, you can capture the 4 and the 5 at the same time that you take in your build. It is not possible to capture a build with a card of any other rank than that announced for the build. For example the table contains a 4 and a 3 combined into a build of 7, plus a separate 2. You cannot play a 9 to take the build of 7 plus the 2 - the build can only be captured with a 7.
5. Adding to a build:
There are two ways of adding to a build: You may add a card from your hand to a single build, increasing the capturing number, provided that you also hold a card which will capture the new build. At the same time you may incorporate additional cards from the table into the build, if they are equal to the new capturing number. In this case the build will become multiple. You can never use a card from the table to change the value of a single build. Example A the table contains a build consisting of two threes, announced as a build of six. If you hold a two and an eight, you can add the two to the build announcing "building 8". The next player, holding an ace and a nine, could then add the ace and say "building 9". The capturing number of a multiple build can never be changed. If the original build of two threes in the above example had been announced as building three (rather than building six), it would not be possible for a player holding a two and a five to add the two to the build, making five. Example B the table contains an ace, a two and a four; the ace and the four have been combined by a previous player into a build of five. You hold a three, an eight and a ten. You can play your three onto the single five-build and announce "building eight", but you are not allowed to incorporate the two from the table into this build to make it a build of ten. Example C the table contains a three and a four, built into a seven, and a separate nine. You hold a two and a nine. You can play your two, combining it with the seven-build to make nine, and at the same time incorporate the nine on the table into the build, converting it to a multiple build and saying "building nine". You may add to any build, single or multiple, by playing a card from your hand which, either alone or combined with other cards on the table which are not yet in builds, matches the existing capture number of the build, provided that you hold a card which can capture the combined build. Example The table contains a 9-build consisting of a 5 and a 4, and there is also a 3 on the table. You hold a six and two nines. You can play your 6, combining it with the 3 and the existing build to make a new multiple build of 9. Then on your next turn (provided that no one else captured) you could add one of the nines from your hand to the build. Finally, on the following turn, you could capture the whole build with your second nine. Note that when making or adding to a build, you must contribute a card to it from your hand. You cannot just combine various cards which are already on the table to form a build. Note also that once a build contains more than one card or sets of cards which add to the capturing number, it is a multiple build and the capturing number can no longer be changed. Example. There is a multiple 8-build of 3-5-8 on the table, and there is also a loose 6 on the table. In your hand you have 2, 8, 8, 10. You may add one of your 8s to the build, making 3-5-8-8, or to add your 2 together with the 6 on the table, making 3-5-8-2-6, still with capture value 8. You cannot use your 2 to change the capture value to 10.
6. Trailing:
If you simply play a card without building or capturing, the card is placed face up on the table alongside any other layout cards and remains there to be captured or built on in future. It is then the next player's turn. Playing a card without building or capturing is sometimes called trailing. You are allowed to trail a card even if that card could have made a capture. Example Suppose that in a four player partnership game your partner has two tens and you have one. Your partner plays a 10 and the next player does not take it. On your turn, if you suspect that your partner has a second 10, you can play your 10 and not capture, leaving both tens on the table for your partner. The only case in which trailing is not allowed is when there is a build on the table which you were the last player to add to.

When all the cards have been played in the final deal, the last player who made a capture also wins any cards which are left on the table. That is why it is important that the dealer should announce "last" when dealing the last cards.
Hint on tactics: it is often good for the dealer to hold back a face card to play last if possible; this will capture a matching face card on the table and thereby also win any other table cards that remain.

Scoring
Each player (or team) counts their score based on the pile of cards they have won. There are eleven possible points in each hand: whoever has the Most Cards gets three points; whoever has Most Spades is one point; each Ace is worth one point (capturing an ace with another ace is called "cash" by some players) the ten of diamonds, called Big Casino or the Good Ten, is worth two points; the two of spades, called Little Casino or the Good Two, is worth one point. If there is a tie for most cards or most spades, no one gets those points. Whoever first reaches a total of 21 or more points, over however many rounds it takes, wins the game. If two people reach the target on the same round, whoever has the higher score wins. If there is a tie, another round is played.

Proverbs

No one can go back and make a brand new start. Anyone can start from now and make a brand new ending. You can't make someone love you. All you can do is be someone who can be loved, and the rest is up to the person to realize your worth.
It's better to lose your pride to the one you love than to lose the one you love because of pride. We spend too much time looking for the right person to love or finding fault with those we already love, when instead we should be perfecting the love we give.

A Friend

What makes me happy?
There must be something,
That gives me joy.

What makes me happy?
It should be inside me,
But what I don’t know.

What makes me happy?
Is ever changing,
I’m never waving,
Good bye to you.

What makes me happy?
A good friend will do me.
There aren’t many people,
Who’re friends with me.

What makes me happy?
To go back where we started,
Would make me unhappy.

Cuz’ you make me happy,
With all that you do,
For me.

Un Amigo
Traducción: 14 Septiembre 2005

¿Qué me hace feliz?
Debería haber algo
Que me da gozo

¿Qué me hace feliz?
Derbería saberlo
Pero, no lo sé

¿Qué me hace feliz?
Siempre cambia
Nunca dire
Adios a ti

¿Qué me hace feliz?
Un buen amigo hará
No hay muchos
Que son amigos mios

¿Qué me hace feliz?
Volver donde empezamos
Me pondría triste

Porque me haces feliz
Con todo que haces para mi.

Alone

When I’m alone
All I can do is cry
Just when I figure things out
I’m so confused.

I just want to be happy
Is that so hard to ask?
Fun isn’t found in wrong decisions
But depression is.

I’m not that wrong
But I’m still depressed
Someone hold me close
Forever and don’t let go.

Anger

Much anger in me
How could this be?

Why must I feel like this?
All alone with loneliness

It gets me so angry
I just want to go crazy.

I feel so alone
I want to be known.

By someone who loves me
Who’ll be with me through eternity.

Black Butterfly

My black butterfly
Fly back to me
Be with me again
Again with me
My black butterfly

Circles

I just can’t explain
exactly how I feel.
Oh how I want to.
It would help me so.

I wish I could explain
just exactly how it is
why I feel down
like I’ve failed.

I suppose it could be
that I’m just disappointed
in myself right now
cuz I don’t do what I know.

I go with the flow
not taking responsibility
throwing away my happiness
with every lack of decision.

I want to do better.
I want to do it all.
But I am just me,
small and weak.

I know that God can help.
If I put my trust in Him,
but then I have to do
all that He asks me.

Oh how much I want
to be all that I can.
I just don’t do
what I know I need to.

I need to decide
and just do it.
But my valor fails me,
when I give it a try.

This is my dilemma,
it just goes in circles.
I want it to stop.
But I can’t make it.

Confusion

How can one be so confused?
I cannot tell my own feelings,
But how can that be
When they are my own.

Life has gotten me lost
Or I lost myself in life
Which one I know not
I’m so confused about all this

What can one do?
All I know for sure,
Is one so loving up above
Watches and cares for me.

That’s all I really need to know
Is that I can ask him anything
And with faith I can know
All that I desire and more.

Deep Pain

Oh, stay with me
I don’t want you to leave
It’s not about me,
It’s what you want to cleave.

I was so pained
Deep to my inner core
But then I’ve gained
Great knowledge of the soul

You take the risk
When you fall for anyone
But me you ask
It is worth what’s been done

And you were worth
All the pain and suffering
For I’d not realize
How much you are to me.

Down
22 September 2005

I feel so down
that I can’t explain how.
I want to be happy.

But it’s good to ponder
when I feel like this
to find out who I am.

Because I feel as if
I don’t have identity,
just mind, body and spirit.

I know I’m God’s child
but really who I am
I can’t really decide.

I want to be great,
and follow God’s will
all that I can.

Teach and baptize
just as I am called
in this marvelous work.

But when it’s time
to go and do the work
somehow I don’t have the desires.

When it’s time to teach
I just sit and listen
to my comp. explain it all.

I just feel like
I don’t do anything
with all that I know.

But something keeps me
from doing all I can,
what God wants me to.

I want to know
just who I am
all that’s inside.

I want to stand
for what I believe
and not falter.

Why am I who I am?
I give in to everything.
Why is that?

I just want to be
who God wants me to be,
a faithful servant.

I want to be
all that I’ve been taught
and all that I know.

Drive

Driving down the road
I turned by a toad

Going that way and this
Never stopping for a hiss

The weather so bad
And I am so mad

About to explode is the cloud
It would be so loud

And all this I drive
For I live where I ‘rive

Manejar

Manejando por la calle
Doblé por un sapo

Yendo por aquí y allá
Nunca parando por las gritas

El tiempo tan feo
Y yo tan enojado

La nube casi se explode
Sería muy fuerte

Y todo esto manejo
Porque me gusta donde llego

El Día Especial
23 Septiembre 2005

Cuando estoy feliz
no me preocupo por nada
y la pierdo yo

y ese sentimiento
más querido
huye de mi alma

y mi falta de cuidado
se vuelva tristeza,
aquella cosa que duele.

Tan precioso es
el alma adentro
y el cuido de ella.

Todo que hacemos
afecta aquella cosa,
el alma preciosa.

Como aquel hombre
que vino una vez
el único perfecto

la felicidad
no nos da
tanta oportunidad

Cuando la tenemos
que día especial
que le hemos recibido.

Emptiness
13 November 2003

No song sooths my soul,
After it has been sung.

No music fills my ears,
When it’s over and done.

No game that brings me joy,
After its been played.

No work that keeps me busy,
When all the work is slaved.

No fulfillment out of life,
With each day that I live.

All this emptiness inside,
Of which I’d like to give.

Happy Rain
12 August 2004

Rain, Rain tomorrow
So I can feel God’s love
That He’s sending from above

And on the morrow
It will be a good day
I can be glad that day

Then my life will change
From that muchly hated thing
With so much more to bring

And then it will continue
With all it being joyful
And to God be grateful.

Jennae

To one who’s named Jennae.
I ask with no delay,
To great importance of a question.
The answer I’ll even give a suggestion.

I would like to know
If one so special
Would like to go
With me in formal?

At prom with me,
I’d like you to be.
Now it’s up to you,
But I hope you do.

being with you I could never be sad.

Just thinking about you makes me glad
and about when in your presence, I’ll be.

You are a good friend to me
in so many wonderful and awesome ways.

Your smile has the light of a thousand days
and so penetrates my soul with happiness.

Your hands to me are so cute and precious
holding mine near to keep them warm and near.

That wonderful hour when your voice I’ll hear
talking to you, I feel so special inside.

I never want to leave your side
because you care about me so much.

Life
7 June 2004

Was it really necessary
All the tears I’ve cried
All the pain I’ve felt
All the emptiness I’ve had

All the tears I’ve cried
When I’s feeling lonely
Wanting to be wanted
Needing to be needed

All the pain I’ve felt
From when I was down
Feeling like no one cared
And wishing I wasn’t

All the emptiness I’ve had
Because nothing makes sense
Nothing giving me joy
Or fulfillment out of life

Yes it was necessary
For the tears I cried
For the pain I felt
For the emptiness inside

The tears to let it out
The pain to show me happiness
The emptiness to value life
Great experiences, no?

Lonely
29 November 2004

Why won’t any one listen to me,
when I’m feeling down and lonely,
just when I want a listening ear,
to hear all that I feel inside?

Where is my friend when I need one,
just someone to be by my side,
to listen and care for me,
as I want to be and do for them?

My soul is aching from what it holds.
Someone come and help me,
be my friend till the end,
and I will be by your side.

When ever you need me
to hear your souls complaint
or just to wipe away the tears
from that wonderful friendly face.

Melanie

You are a beautiful lady
Never will it be fading

Your voice is so sweet
Like a song birds tweet

Pretty is your hair
Like a mountain grizzly bear

Into your eyes I look
You have me overtook

All of me, is yours
I’ll open all your doors

I can’t sleep a wink
For all is you I think

I just thought you should know
How much I love you so

So wonderful to me are you
I’m so glad you love me too.

My Heart

He took a piece of my heart
And he pierced it,
As if by a dart,
With every “I don’t care!”
Not knowing he was killing it.
But would he care
If he’d known
What he’d done?

My Soul

My soul was hurting
From one so unknowing
It really hurt
And I felt like dirt.

I tried humor’s healing hand
To heal my soul and,
It’s not so good anymore
So their needed to be more,

A listening ear
And you were here
To sooth my soul
And I thank you so.

One More

Just one more look,
At that pretty face I took.

Just one more smile,
Lasting me for awhile.

Just one more word,
That can be heard.

Just one more seconds,
Of being in her presence.

Such beauty has she,
More than any one could be.

For I know not,
What can be done.

To have her won,
To be my best friend.

Uno Más

Una Mirada más
A esa cara linda mire

Una sonrisa más
Para durar un tiempo

Una palabra más
Que puedo escuchar

Un segundo más
En su presencia

Que belleza tiene
Más que pudía tener

Pues no sé
Que puedo hacer

Para que ella sea
Mi mejor amiga

Rain

Rain, rain tomorrow,
I need to shed my tears,
So that no one will know my fears.

And on the morrow,
I will forget about my cares.
It will be filled with earthly cares.

Then my life will be the same,
That awful boring thing.
With nothing else to bring.

And so it goes on,
All it inside,
That awful boring thing.

Lluvia
Traducción: 11 Noviembre 2005

Llueve, llueve mañana,
Para derramar mis lágrimas,
Para que nadie sepa mis temores.

Y en la mañana,
Olvidaré de todo esto.
Estará lleno de lo temporal.

Entonces mi vida sera lo mismo,
Esa cosa aburrida.
Para no darme más.

Y así se va,
Todo adentro,
Esa cosa aburrida.

Somebody

So much anger inside
What can I do?
I just want to blow up
However you do that

I am mad, but at what?
All this rage
How’d it get there?
I don’t want it.

Please leave me
My anger and rage
Go elsewhere,
For I don’t want you.

Frustration also inside
Destroying stuff feels good
But I can’t destroy nothing
Because it’s all locked up

How do I get it out,
Without blowing up
Or rocking something hard?
This is so infuriating

Stop it now.
All I can do is sleep,
But that’s just a prolongation,
Of my stupid feelings

What do my feelings mean?
So confusing they are
Anger and rage
I do not want.

Please save me
Grand somebody
I feel so alone
Please help me.

Sonnet 13

For I do not know what I will now do
To play or to work is tough to decide,
To work I must this summer, but for who?

Summer commeth quick and so then doth fall
I must choose a path for I graduate
So then I must be getting on the ball
College I go, which to decide I hate!

And I will submit that I am tired
All this a problem that solved it will be.
But not now, now I sleep to get hired
I will now worry later about me.

With nothing but the warm air on my lap
I will lie down now and take a long nap.

The Stormy Day
3 October 2005

The stormy day sent by God,
to help His lost child find the way.
He was always a good little boy.
Merely this time, he took his own way.

Not being perfect, differed his way from God’s.
Not too far from God he walked along.
Thinking he was obedient to God’s commands.
He felt that astray he had not gone.

Having grown to the stature of a man,
was called to serve God in a chosen land.
Wanting so much to serve with his all,
but differed, all the work by his hand.

Realizing this, he wanted to change,
and on that lovely stormy day,
in his own path next to God’s,
this man realized that he had gone astray.

Wanting for the welfare of his soul,
but being on a path so close to God,
he prayed for help to know what to do.
And began thinking about what he did wrong.

He had neglected the repentance of his sins.
Leaving them unresolved and in the past,
being afraid to confront his offended.
A huge weight, to himself, he had cast.

Having so much knowledge and wisdom,
but failing to do anything with it.
He had lost the pathway to God’s kingdom.
Having known all he needed to obtain it.

Now this man has to decide
what will he do with what he learned.
Will he let life happen to him,
or Noble and Great, will he become?

Today

Good day! Good Day!
It’s a good day!
All is well,
And I am swell.

Or I thought today
Was a good day
I’m having a horrible day
So tell me it’s okay.

And I will believe you
For what you say is true,
And I’ll hold you close
And never let you go.

Hoy

¡Buen día! ¡Buen día!
¡Hoy es un buen día!
Todo está bien
Y yo tambien

O pensé que hoy
Era un día bueno
Es un día horrible
Entonces dime que está bien.

Y te creeré
De lo que me dices es verdad
Y te tomaré cerca
Y nunca te dejaré

Valentine

To the one I love
Who came from up above.

You make me feel so good
Like no one ever could.

So beautiful is she
More than anyone could be.

You’re all I’ve ever wanted
And a whole lot more.

I’m in love with you
And I can’t stop thinking about you.

Why

Why do I smile so big
When the girl that annoys me so
Walks by me in the hall?

Why when my deepest desire is in my hands
Do I push it away,
As if I hate the thought of it?

Why do I want more
When I have all
That I’ve ever wanted and more?

Why, why, why
All this I wonder and more,
Why do I do what I do?

How the Institute Helps Us with Missionary Preparation

First let’s try to put things into perspective. This life is all about preparation, for things in this life and after this life.

“Therefore I would that ye should be perfect even as I, or your Father who is in heaven is perfect.” 3 Nephi 12:48

Our objective is to become perfect. Become like Christ or our Heavenly Father. Or in other words we are preparing to become God’s, meaning our exaltation. But how do we obtain all this? Line upon line, precept upon precept, here a little and there a little. So we see that it’s not all at once. So we need to do our best. “Knowing that you can do better, and always striving to do better, is doing your best”. Everything that happens in our lives prepares us for something else.

“18 Whatever principle of intelligence we attain unto in this life, it will rise with us in the resurrection.
19 And if a person gains more knowledge and intelligence in this life through his diligence and obedience than another, he will have so much the advantage in the world to come.” D&C 130:18-19

The knowledge and intelligence we have will be an advantage for us. Just one example: The church or the gospel has been given to us to help prepare us for all things. But we have to do our part for it to work. From the Bible I’d like to read a parable of the 10 virgins:

“1 Then shall the kingdom of heaven be likened unto ten virgins, which took their lamps, and went forth to meet the bridegroom.
2 And five of them were wise, and five were foolish.
3 They that were foolish took their lamps, and took no oil with them:
4 But the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps.
5 While the bridegroom tarried, they all slumbered and slept.
6 And at midnight there was a cry made, Behold, the bridegroom cometh; go ye out to meet him.
7 Then all those virgins arose, and trimmed their lamps.
8 And the foolish said unto the wise, Give us of your oil; for our lamps are gone out.” Matthew 25:1-8

Now I’m going to stop there. As we see that half of them were not ready. They didn’t do their part, they didn’t prepare themselves, or they were not ready to be prepared. That statement is very important, so I’ll say it again. They were not ready to be prepared. What does that mean for us?

“But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear” 1 Peter 3:15

There are four important things here. “Sanctify the Lord God in your hearts” meaning first we need to have a testimony. “Be ready to give an answer to every man that asketh you” Secondly, we need to understand the gospel in such a way that we can explain it to others.

“Seek not to declare my word, but first seek to obtain my word…” D&C 11:21

We need to obtain the word before we declare it. I like the word “obtain” that he uses. To me it says understand and apply. Going back to 1 Peter, thirdly, it says, “a reason of hope that is in you” if we understand and apply these things we will bean example of hope to others. Lastly, “with meekness and fear” we need to be humble in doing all this. I really like what Joseph Smith said:

“I teach them correct principles, and they govern themselves.” Joseph Smith

“And behold, as the tree beginneth to grow, ye will say: Let us nourish it with great care, that it may get root, that it may grow up, and bring forth fruit unto us. And now behold, if ye nourish it with much care it will get root, and grow up, and bring forth fruit.” Alma 32:37

We need to do all that we can to nourish the tree. This is so important; this is the “action” of us. We have to do it ourselves no one can do it for us. Just like the five virgins couldn’t share their oil with the other five. We need to have that desire to perfect ourselves no matter what the cost. Now how does all this tie into missionary preparation? So let’s talk about the so called “best two years”. But were they really the best two years? If they were you have failed. The mission is not the climax of one’s life but an upward slope, just like the rest of our life. We can’t start preparing when the flood is here for it will be too late and we won’t be ready. Here’s something to think on:

“Sitting up to your neck in water is no good for what will you do when a wave comes along? But if you are standing ankle deep in the water you have that much more on the wave. If it is still too much, Christ is there and he will be able to pull you up from under the wave so that you are saved. That is why you need to be a giant so that the biggest wave will only beat upon your ankles.” Matt Tubbs

What a vision. Also on the same lines here is another quote:

“The stomach of our souls is a bottomless pit. Fill it with the spirit.” Matt Tubbs

I’d like to add: or the application of the principles of the gospel, so that we may have the spirit. This is why we attend church to be able to learn that gospel.

“And moreover, I would ask, do ye suppose that ye must not worship God only once in a week?” Alma 32:11

This implies that we should worship Him more than once a week. Also it says:

“Treasure up in your minds continually the words of life” D&C 84:85

Not only that but He’s given us ways to do so. Like: FHE, Young Men’s/Women’s, Seminary, and lastly, the institute. This is the program or tool given to us, specifically for this our stage of life. But we need to be prepared ourselves before anything that the Lord has given us will be of any use to us. Truthfully you don’t need the institute to be a great missionary, but what a great resource it is for us. Preparation for the mission is personal. Yes, your family or friends can help pay or buy the necessary things but spiritually you’re on your own. Preparing yourselves spiritually depends on your personal desire to do so and on your level of commitment.

“And they were all young men, and they were exceedingly valiant for courage, and also for strength and activity; but behold, this was not all—they were men who were true at all times in whatsoever thing they were entrusted.” Alma 53:20

We need to be like them “true at all times.” This is something that you have to do for yourselves. So use the institute. It’s here for you. You can learn so much because the spirit is within the walls of the institute and if you are striving to learn and better yourselves, the spirit will teach and help you do so. Then you can be more prepared for all things of life and not just for a mission. So that we can be examples to those around us and that we might be able to assist them. And bring them to the light of the gospel or Christ, because we have strived to do so ourselves first. I know it’s hard. I know that God love’s us so much. He wants us to succeed and has given us everything that we need to do so. We have to take hold of it and use it how it was intended. I love this gospel and I know of its truth. It is the only way that we can return to our father in heaven and be as he is, perfect. In the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.

Drive

“Driving down the road
I turned by a toad”
Is like the road of life and its twists and turns

”Going that way and this
Never stopping for a hiss”
Not really wanting to stop for fear I might get hurt again

”The weather so bad
And I am so mad”
I got bottled feeling, and I don’t know what to do, and so I get mad at my life

”About to explode is the cloud
It would be so loud”
I don’t know how much longer I can hold it in, and if I can’t it would be bad

”And all this I drive
For I live where I ‘rive”
I know this life is worth it, if I can just hold on.

The One

The one, with whom, you marry is such a great and important choice. A choice that you should ponder and pray about, even consult with those who have and are married in the same way that you desire to be married, like for example your parents. Your parents are great sources of wisdom as are your grandparents; you should listen to them while and after making this grand choice. Keep in mind that when you marry you become one flesh and need to live your own lives how you both feel is right, not to be governed by anyone else. Such a choice should be made with much wisdom, for it will affect your whole life and all eternity. Shouldn’t you then treat this time of your life with the same amount of wisdom? Serving by doing more than service for the one, with whom, you could spend all eternity, is the best way you can start and live a long, loving, and service full relationship that will last through the eternities. You will make it to the temple together, and you will be ready and worthy for each other even with all of the weight and responsibilities that come with your wonderful celestial marriage. Don’t forget all the joys and happiness’s that also come from this preordained grouping for two of God’s children.

One of the best ways that you can be prepared for the highest and most special level of commitment and devotion that comes with this awesome uniting of husband and wife is by becoming the best “you” that you can be. How is this accomplished you might wonder? On a scale of easiness this would be on the very hard side. This requires a constant effort and struggle to always do what you need to and should be doing. You need to take a step back from your busy and confusing life and look at who you are and what you have become. Once you have done this you need to look for all the things in your life and who you are that do not meet the Lord’s standards. Make a list of those things, and write them down in a safe place so that you can look at them frequently. Be careful with this; do not come down on yourself that you are worthless because of all your faults and shortcomings. This is the part that helps you to do your best, which is all that your Heavenly Father requires of us. A wise man once said, “Knowing that you can do better and always striving to do better, is doing your best.”

Once you have made a list of these things pick some, one or two, that you want to work on, maybe the easier ones. Set a goal and plan how you will overcome this weakness. Don’t forget to pray and involve God. For example if you are short on patience, pray and ask God for help gaining patience. He won’t just give it to you but he gives you or allows you to have experiences that you might learn patience. Also don’t be discouraged if you falter in achieving your goal. You might perhaps falter many times on the way to accomplishing your goals, some more than others. The important thing is that you are progressively doing better. Until you can say that you have accomplished the thing that you have set out to do. Beware, you aren’t done yet. Just like a broken bone is weaker where it has been broken so are you where you once were weak. If you have fallen once you can fall again. Going through this process also makes you stronger. Since you have done it before you know the signs and tempting places, which helps you so that you can avoid them and not falter but be strong and immovable. One more thing, your partner deserves the most perfect you. “Therefore I would that ye should be perfect even as I, or your Father who is in heaven is perfect.” 3 Nephi 12:48. You need to be the best you can for yourself, your spouse, and your God.

Another thing going along with being your best self is getting rid of all ungodliness in your life. You have just been taught how to better yourself, but it will not do much good if you don’t rid yourself of worldliness also. Again take a step back look at things, people, and their influences on you. Now you must decide if these are inspiring and uplifting or harmful and evil influences. Potential influences are things like: movies, TV, magazines, friends, thoughts, etc; whether for righteousness or wickedness. “Wherefore, every thing which inviteth and enticeth to do good, and to love God, and to serve him, is inspired of God. But whatsoever thing persuadeth men to do evil, and believe not in Christ, and deny him, and serve not God, then ye may know with a perfect knowledge it is of the devil.” Moroni 7:13, 17. This scripture gives you the way whereby you are to judge the things of your life. Then make a list as before and plan how to overcome them. The important thing is to act. These are good ideas but you must take action. Stay close to God and He will help you in your unending path to perfection, which is this life, not to mention the many blessings He has waiting for you as you are true and faithful trudging on His narrow, less taken path. As you rid your life of evil influences you will be more in tune with the Holy Spirit of God, being more apt to hear, listen, and able to follow His guidance and council. Does not your “spouse to be” deserve someone that is close to God and has His spirit, so that you might receive revelation for your family which helps them be close to God in this deteriorating world? By doing these things you deserve and are worthy of a spirit-filled spouse for yourself.

For those of you that have priesthood capabilities, does not your wife deserve a worthy man who can use his God given authority to bless your family? Not only is your wife deserving to have the priesthood in the home but so do all of God’s children that are brought into this world. “Everything we learn as priesthood bearers should bless our families.”¹ She needs to know that you can bless her and her future family, especially before you are married. If you’re not ready now, why would you be when you are married? You need to prepare yourself now for what is to come. Do your best and be a worthy and honorable priesthood holder. Women, you also need to be worthy of a faithful priesthood holder. As you magnify God’s priesthood, you will touch the lives of many and give valuable service to all of them. Your family will benefit the most from this service because they are the nearest to you, they will see your example increase and your love grow, and they are and will want to be a part of it.

Next in line are your callings. Every one, when they become a member, is a home or visiting teacher. This is one of the callings that every member of a certain age and up has. It is not one that we are set apart to do but it is of such great importance that we magnify it. In so doing you bless the lives of so many other families, even your own because God will bless you and your family greatly. Then you have those that are given to you by your bishop or other authorized servants. By magnifying your callings you serve others and it shows those around you that you believe in God and that you have a testimony of this everlasting gospel. Who wants a spouse that doesn’t magnify that which they have been given to be in charge of? How would you be able to teach your children to magnify their future calling if you are not magnifying yours now? If you’re not devoted to your callings, if you’re not devoted to your beliefs, if you’re not devoted to your God, how could you be any more devoted to your spouse and kids? Serving others and your God shows that you are striving to enter His presence, with your family at your side, for all eternity.

Becoming less selfish will improve any relationship that you are in. The best way to do this is by serving those around you, including those close to you, and forgetting yourself in their service. A willing man serving others cannot be prideful, but is humble. Christ was the most humble; no wonder He had a life full of service. Christ devoted His whole life to the service of others. God has not asked so much of you; just serve others, with your heart willing, when and as much as you are able to. By so doing you and those you serve will be humble. By serving others you are serving your God (Matthew 25:40). Not only that but you can be an instrument in the hands of God to bless others and your love for them will grow.

Service increases your love for those you serve. If you care about someone you should let them know frequently. Think about what they need or want and do your best to help them obtain it. Do little things for them, let them know you care. For example you might want to write them little notes saying how much you care about them and leave them where they will find them. Be creative and do new things that they would enjoy more than you, they will feel special that you have chosen to do what they enjoy doing. Everyone needs to feel important or that someone cares about them more than anyone else in the world. You will never be done with this part, it is ever ongoing. The moment you stop showing that you care and doing those small little things is when your relationship starts going down the drain and your love for others and especially the ones you care about most will fall apart.

Lean on God. This too will better any relationship. When you involve Him in your relationship and follow His council, He is able and will bless you more fully and give you more guidance in this troubled world. You can never be too close to God. When you struggle, try to figure things out on your own, but pray for inspiration and guidance, He will help you. Obey all the commandments to the best of your ability. Pray with your heart. Involve Him in your choice of an eternal mate, He knows you better than anyone. He will help you find one with whom you will be happy with for eternity. You will find just the right one for you and both of you will have Him in your lives and your family will be “highly favored of the Lord” as it says it scriptures for those who are close to God. “And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent” John 17:3. You can only know them if you are close to them and follow their council. As it says here “this is life eternal”, that is your goal, obtain it!

Think of them often and make them laugh and be happy; why be with them if you cannot be such? For such is the plan and purpose of life. “Men are that they might have joy” 2 Nephi 2:25. The happiness and joy you experience in this time of your life, not only will be the most rewarding to you so far but it will also be a type of things to come in the eternities.
